'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’ movie review: A sequel with a touch of rawness that retains its charm
The birds are back! Even though it's been 23 years for us, it hasn't been that long for our feathered friends. After escaping from Tweedy's poultry farm in Chicken Run, they now live on a peaceful bird sanctuary island. But crossing roads has become too ordinary, so for a new adventure in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, they have to cross a lot more. This sequel is good, but it doesn't hit the mark perfectly.
In the first film, a group of British chickens, led by Ginger and the American circus rooster Rocky (voiced by Thandiwe Newton and Zachary Levi, who are now a couple), escaped from a farm. In the sequel, they have to rescue their daughter Molly and other chickens from a nugget processing plant, like a 'Saving Private Ryan' mission. Chicken Run was a groundbreaking stop-motion animated film and a classic. However, the sequel, while funny and capturing the original's essence, doesn't break new ground.
The film doesn't dive deep into the issues of mass animal product production like Bong Joon-ho's Okja. Instead, it focuses on a rescue mission. However, it has its challenges. The original characters are back, but the new voice cast doesn't capture the magic of the first film. The idea of making the plot opposite to the original is interesting, but the execution isn't as strong. The British humor is great, but there aren't enough jokes. The visuals are fantastic, with references to classics like The Truman Show, James Bond, and Mission Impossible. Still, the creativity of the grand exit in the first film is missing.
Watching the film on the big screen would have been more enjoyable due to the stop-motion technique. Creating a sequel for a classic like Chicken Run is challenging, and while it's not as good as the original, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is a nice little movie that has enough to charm the audience.
